Slight network outrage

Some clients today may have had a slight issue when trying to access one or two of the servers at Ultima Development Laboratories. The reason for this is there was a small attack that the guards was filtering which caused a small amount of the systems to experience some latency and temporary connectivity issues.

This should now be fine. If you are still having an issue, submit us a ticket with a current traceroute.

Problems with UDL Mainsite Backup DNS

This is not a problem on any clients systems or websites and only affects our main website. We currently installed a backup system for if our main website does down.

Due to some slight problems, it has now and then detected it as down and automatically has switched to the backup websites. We are working on improving this.

This is needed if ever we have any issues and need to redirect the website whenever needed.

Maintenance Work

Some services were disrupted shortly prior to this post as the node and some other systems had undergone some maintenance work.

They are now back online but may need to be taken down again for further work. We apologize for this unexpected downtime.

Network Downtime

A VPS was rooted yesterday. While we sorted the problem out within a very short time, the datacenter didn't seem to have been informed.

For this reason, the node has been taken offline. We have contacted them, though we have no ETA for normal service to be resumed, but it is estimated to take no longer than two hours.

UPDATE: the datacenter has been informed and the node should be brought back online shortly.

UPDATE 2: the datacenter reports that the node is now back online. Normal service should now be resumed - thank you for your patience.

Network Outage

There have been reports of network outages lasting for a few minutes. The exact cause is unknown, but it has been resolved and should not occur again.

Update - service seems to have been resumed, but we're not yet sure what caused the downtime. Further news will be posted here as and when we receive it.

We can confirm there is a networking issue at the datacenter which is causing slow page loading for some clients and their users. We are currently in the process of confirming what is causing the issue and to get it fixed.

Unknown issue on s1.directadmin

It seems that today, someone has started either massive scan on s1.directadmin or something else is happening.

Viruses/Malicious websites

It came to our attention a few weeks ago that there was a virus related problem affecting a lot of websites hosted on S1.

Typical symptoms, varying depending on browser, included blank pages, 'page cannot be found' errors, and redirections to malicious websites.

This was believed to be resolved when Apache was reinstalled, but the problem appears to have resurfaced. If you own a website that is affected by this, please encourage your visitors to keep their antivirus/antimalware software up to date, and, if possible, encourage use of Firefox, as this browser seems to prevent redirection.

The matter is being investigated fully and we believe the problem does not originate in Apache as we originally thought. We apologize for this inconvenience and your patience while we work to fix this permanently is appreciated.

Update - 07:07: In about an hour's time, S1 will be pulled from the rack and replaced with a backup.

Update - 13:54: Apache is currently being rebuilt.

Update - 15:06: Apologies for the delay; this process is taking longer than expected. Rest assured we are working on it actively to resume service ASAP.

Update - 16:58: Apache is now operational and the latest backup has been restored.

Spam issues

The systems are now online. However, mail on nemo has been disabled until we sort out the issue.

We are sorry for slight downtime, but one of our servers was spamming and this caused the datacenter to take the server of the network. We are working with the datacenter to get this sorted.

Possible Mass Deface

Downtime warning

BurstNET™ Network Engineering will be performing maintenance in our Scranton facility during the hours of 1AM and 4AM EST on Sunday, March 1st, 2009. At this time, BurstNET™ Network Engineering will be performing an upgrade to our Cisco™ 6500-series routing/switching equipment, in preparation for adding additional transport/transit capacity to the network.

This maintenance will be service affecting, however, due to the existing redundant network design, we do not expect full network downtime. We do expect two periods (estimated 20-30 minutes each) of higher than normal latency and/or packet loss while routing cards are replaced/upgraded, cabling switched, and BGP updated/reloaded, during the maintenance window. Proper planning, pre-configuration, and testing has been completed in advance of this maintenance period, in order to minimize as much as possible the overall time that will be service affecting.

Some of our clients might be affected by this. If you are a server client, it is possible that you will be affected.

I am pleased to say that all the systems are now coming online. I have been informed that most should already now be online and working.

Should you have any further questions, submitting a ticket would be a best option. UDL will be submitting a techincal report soon about the whole issue.

Also, we are happy to say that we will be extending our remote FTP backup per client to all of our paid clients, home and business plans, for free. Further information about that will be published in due time.

I will update this post once it is confirmed that all is online.

UDL is very sorry for what has happened but unlike others, we have plans for if this happens and sorted it accordly.

Hard Disk Replacement

The HDD replacement didn't go entirely to plan as Centos 5.2 was causing problems. We are now in the process of getting Mandriva 2009.0 reinstalled to solve this!

UPDATE: backups are now being restored. Normal service is expected to resume by 12:00pm (GMT) on Wednesday 27th January.

S1 Issues

As of late, s1.directadmin.ultimalabs.co.uk has been running into memory shortages and as a result, sites hosted on it are inaccessible or return errors intermittently, especially during peak hours.

I've been informed a fix is on the way - in the meantime, your patience is appreciated.
